It all started when Gloria S. (the grand-daughterof Rich & Gloria) was collecting turtle everything. She started with a little quarter size turtle that is now about six inches long and resides in a tank in our living/quilting room where we do our long-arm work. I (being the "Rich" of the three) decided that Gloria (my wife) was turning out too many quilt tops and it was going to cost a small fortune to get them quilted. Being thrifty, as I am, bought a Grace frame and a Brother 1500 machine and thought I was going to save a lot of money just doing hers. This didn't last long since I found that when you roll the quilt during movement the area that you can quilt gets so small you are no longer able to make the designs you started when first you began. Then I bought a WOW Quilting machine (stretched Singer) and that was alright until we moved to Riverbank from Hayward. It was all free motion without a stitch regulator and I wasn't doing too bad until I saw the Gammill. Now, this is the way to save money! After investing more money than I paid for my home in Hayward I was off and quilting with my new Gammell. We decided that this had to become a business since there was no other way to explain the cost. The name came to me from the old expression "Faster than a herd of turtles". We all agreed that this would be good and that was the start of our business name. But this isn't the end of it because no sooner did I get pretty good with the machine they came out with an improvement that I couldn't (or wouldn't) do without. Statler Stitcher Computerized quilting. It came with 400+ patterns and I have designed over 150 more of my own that makes our quilting stand out from the competition in uniqueness. Of course the retrofitting of my machine to computerize it ran the cost up more and now so it won't be paid for in my remaining lifetime. We smile when people see us coming and say here come "Herd of Turtles", and now Ashleigh (great granddaughter) is part of the herd. |
